What is a Holistic Nutritionist?

Picture
R.H.N.s™ (Registered Holistic Nutritionists™) are professionals trained in Natural Nutrition and complementary therapies, whose principal function is to educate individuals and groups about the benefits and health impact of optimal nutrition. They work with clients to identify and help correct the nutritional causes of diseases, and they are qualified to design personalized diet and lifestyle programs that optimize health. A  Holistic Nutritionist or Holistic Nutritional Consultant has as their first goal, prevention of illness and disease, and education for the promotion  of health and vitality.
When symptoms do present, a holistic approach is taken  to deal with the whole person. A practioner's goal is getting to the root cause of the illness or imbalance to help the body  heal itself.  After a comprehensive lifestyle and nutrition analysis is completed, recommendations are based on a variety of symptoms that represent the early stages of illness before they develop into more serious problems. Holistic Nutritionists  consider not only food quality and nutrition, but also stress levels, exercise, and lifestyle.
Since everyone is biochemically unique, Holistic Nutritionists deal with each person individually, offering recommendations specific to their personal needs. No two people are ever treated the same. Your consultant will make suggestions for lifestyle changes, food choices and nutritional supplements. A balance of vitamins, minerals, phyto-nutrients and proteins, as well as physical activity, and mental and spiritual well-being, are needed to achieve optimum health.  Each individual is unique and requires different amounts of these elements to make one healthy.  The holistic health approach encompasses Body, Mind and Spirit, to achieve maximum health benefits.
Holistic Nutritionists look at the long-term impact and implications of additives, preservatives, pesticides, and antibiotics, and are critical of short-term studies that suggest these chemicals are safe for human consumption.

Holistic Health

Holistic health is about taking care of the whole you naturally. Holistic health takes into consideration all aspects of lifestyle that have an affect on  personal well being; body, mind and spirit.  Maintaining these three areas will bring your whole being into balance and give you optimal health.  In this way you can prevent premature aging, illness and disease.  At any point in one's life, bringing these areas into balance can strengthen the body's own ability to heal, thus reversing many conditions which may be developing. Body, mind and spirit are interconnected, so an imbalance in one area brings imbalance throughout.

Body
Balancing the body involves nutrition, physical activity, flexibility, and rest.  It is important to have the right balance of nutrients, in order to sustain the body's energy and functions, and its ability for growth and healing.  Correct nutrition is vital for the body's ability to heal, grow, manufacture hormones, eliminate wastes, hydrate and lubricate.  These nutrients include vitamins and minerals, as well as protein, water, air  and  carbohydrates for energy.  Vitamins and minerals are vital for brain function and regulating moods and hormones, and the ability to cope with stress.
It is also important to balance the amount of physical activity, to use the energy consumed, and to maintain and develop strength. Physical activity is also vital in relieving stress. Exercise helps to eliminate toxins and promote restful sleep, bring lubrication to joints, and increase flexibility and stability.  Appropriate rest is vital for growth, healing, and mood stability.

Mind

Bringing balance to the mind is accomplished by supporting the physical functioning of the brain,  by improving clarity of thought, and stabilizing emotions.  The brain produces a myriad of chemicals, as well as electrical energy. A deficiency of important vitamins and minerals hampers the brain's ability to produce neurotransmitters  and hormones  leading to mood swings, depression, and other physiological symptoms, as well as learning disorders.  The brain produces a myriad of chemicals, as well as electrical energy. symptoms, as well as learning disorders. Clarity of thought and stable mood, enables you to make better choices, good decisions, and use of willpower.
Exercise brings increased oxygen to the brain and is a great stress reliever.  Even the amount of sunlight and darkness each day affects mood and emotional health.  Anxiety and stress have been shown to increase blood pressure and increase risks of heart attack and stroke.

The brain also produces electrical energy which enervates all the tissues of the body.  The Chinese call it  'chi', and has been demonstrated to follow specific pathways throughout the body, as well as nerve impulses which travel through the central nervous system. Our thoughts are even converted into matter as the brain produces neuropeptides, which interact with all other cells and tissues in the body.
Balancing the mind is relieving stress, anxiety, and improving cognitive function. Supporting   the physical needs of the brain (nutrition, water, oxygen), the energy pathways, and quieting the mind, increase the bodies own natural healing powers.

Spirit

Spirituality means different things to different people.  It may be a belief in something greater, an act of worship, relationships, a sense of self -worth, or outlook on life.   I believe it is ultimately about love and gratitude.  Feeling loved and sharing love brings a relaxation of the mind, lowers blood pressure and allows the body to heal, as well as promoting an optimistic view of life.  What you believe affects your physical health as well as your mental health.  If you believe you won't get well, then you probably won't.  Scientific studies have shown hospital patients who believe in prayer are more likely to get well quicker than those who do not.
The life force or vital energy  that flows through our body is said to be connected to "the universal intelligence running the universe".  This energy can be shared and we can connect with each other through this energy. You've all experienced it - the loving touch of a friend's hand; there is an energy exchange that occurs.   You can begin to balance your spiritual self by clearing the energy pathways, spending time with yourself in relaxation and meditation, and sharing love and gratitude with family, friends, and those you come in contact with daily.
